10 Things You Didn't Know About Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, I am sure you are all running around buying and wrapping presents, cooking and traveling all over creation. I am in the same boat, but I thought it may be interesting to take a quick break and reflect on the holiday itself. For a holiday we spend so much time thinking about all year, there is still much we don't know about it.

Here are a few stats and facts I was able to uncover that you may not have known about Christmas. Enjoy!

10 Cartoons You Were Probably Watching on a Saturday Morning in 1985

Every Saturday morning, it saddens me to no end when I see my son watching random Disney channel reruns before soccer practice. Yes, these days kids have many more viewing options and with on demand and streaming TV, can pretty much watch whatever they want, but it just isn't the same as the good old days of Saturday morning cartoons.

Growing up, we looked forward to getting up on Saturday mornings and watching the lineup of original cartoons and even then targeted commercials and public service announcements that went along with the shows. Kids ruled Saturday mornings and the shows were wildly popular. So much so, that they used to have prime time shows previewing upcoming seasons of Saturday programming.

Those days are gone, but thankfully we have the Internet to help us relive them a bit. Here are 10 of the shows you were probably watching on a Saturday morning around this time in 1985.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Selfies

selfie stats

Unless you have been hiding under a rock for a year, you should know what a selfie is by now. The term has been around for quite a while, but over the past year it has escaped the vocabulary of social media junkies and has penetrated pop culture in a gigantic way.

Apps are designed specifically for selfie-taking; phone accessories are being designed to help make it easier to snap a selfie; a selfie themed TV show is in the works; heck, they even teach classes now on how to take a better selfie.

People from 2 to 92 are going crazy taking pictures of themselves and then posting them everywhere on social media for their poor friends to give an obligatory like to. Seriously, I was at the train station yesterday and a couple behind me, easily in their 70's, snapped a pic with their phone and then told their senior friends that they wanted a selfie of their trip.

So how crazy is this selfie phenomenon? Here are some of the most interesting (and scary) selfie statistics I've stumbled across in my stat-seeking travels. Enjoy!

What are the Top 10 Most Annoying Sounds?

We all have a specific sound that we just can't stand to listen to. With me, it is excessive stirring and slurping of drinks. OK, that's probably two noises, but the combo drives me nuts. Chances are, that the noises that drive you insane are the same for others. There is actually a scientific explanation for this.

According to a report in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers actually tested to see what the most annoying sounds were and why they annoyed us so much.

Top 10 (and Bottom 5) Shows from NBC's Thursday Night "Must-See TV" Lineup 1982-2004

For Generation Xers and older Millenials like myself, TV on Thursday nights was once appointment-viewing. Starting in 1982 with a lineup of hits like Cheers, FameTaxi and Hill Street Blues and ending in 2004 (unofficially; it was officially renamed in 2006, but 2004-2006 was pretty bad except for The Office)  with the retirement of Friends, NBC created a lineup of evergreen hits that kept delivering for two decades.

10 Things You Didn't Know About Black Friday

I never understood Black Friday. People head out in the middle of the cold night (now almost afternoon) on Thanksgiving just to wait in line for hours to buy a deeply discounted item that is likely not on anyone's actual holiday wish list just because of the deal. Given the amount of gifts that are returned promptly after Christmas, one can imagine that many of these Black Friday purchases are actually sent back. Sure, seems worth it.

Anyways, while I sit here and wait for Cyber Monday deals, here are a few Black Friday stats and facts that you may not have known. If you are brave enough to head out tonight, you can dazzle all of your new friends in line with your Black Friday knowledge.
